"I never wanted to go away, and the hard part now is the leaving you all. I'm not afraid, but it seems as if I should be homesick for you even in heaven." Louisa May Alcott - Little Women - Spoken by Beth to Jo.

The day after the worst day of her life, Rose woke up in a tiny hotel in a tiny town somewhere in Norway. Her back was stiff from the hard mattress, her fingers ached from biting her nails down to the nub, and her eyes were puffy from crying. Jackie woke her up early and bundled her into Pete’s jeep.

A week after... a fortnight after... a year after... )

There are times when Rose is hit by waves of nostalgia so strong that she feels like she might be sick. And it's not anything the Doctor means to do, she knows that, but sometimes... sometimes they go somewhere with snow, and she remembers Women Wept, and the frozen waves, and almost dying, and curled up between Jack and the Doctor to keep warm while they slept, both men's coats tucked around her. Sometimes they stop in Cardiff to refuel, and all she can think about is Charles Dickens and Slitheen and Jack telling outrageous stories (all involving nudity) in a cafe.

And sometimes, when she's visiting mum, a game show will come on, and she'll remember that last adventure the three of them had, losing Jack, losing the Doctor (the proper Doctor, she sometimes can't help but think, even now), how scared she was, and she can't breathe.

Sometimes it happens at less opportune times than sitting in her mum's living room or standing outside the TARDIS with the Doctor just after they land. Like now, when they're running for their lives. A plane buzzes over them and a bomb drops, and Rose's mind is filled with gas masks and barrage balloons and laughing at the Doctor for looking like a U-boat captain after they're all safe in the TARDIS afterwards. She's not paying attention to where she's going, and she stumbles and falls. On her feet again in a moment, of course, and doesn't notice that she's bleeding until they're safe in the TARDIS again.

Blood and the fact that she can't actually put weight on her ankle now that the adrenaline has slowed down.

Obviously, Rose and nostalgia are not exactly friends at the moment.
